Bullpup Boys Tennis Wins Regionals, Advance Six Athletes to State

SCOTT CITY, Kan. – The McPherson High School Boys Tennis team won the Scott Community Regional tournament Saturday, May 10, seeing the Bullpups earn the top spot in the Singles and Doubles tournament.

The Bullpups got 25 points overall to finish on top of the team standings. Scott Community High School finished 2nd with 17 points. Concordia finished 3rd with four points and a four-way tie of Abilene, Colby, Pratt, and Ulysses saw the final spot with three points apiece.

Freshman Cooper Bohme and Senior Owen Neighbors entered the Singles tournament as the No. 1 and No. 2 seed respectively. Both athletes swept their way to the championship rounds, qualifying them to State automatically. The championship match saw a back-and-forth affair taking all three sets, but saw Bohme on top winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

The Doubles tournament saw two McPherson duos, featuring seniors Bryson Archer & Alex Berger and sophomores Jonas Emery & Mason Eisenbarth. Berger/Archer had the top seed to give them an opening round bye, but they dominated in the quarterfinal and semifinal matches, not losing a single game in two set victories (6-0, 6-0). They then won two big sets to win the championship match 6-1, 6-1.

Emery/Eisenbarth also had a first round bye as the No. 2 seed, but battled in the quarterfinal winning on a tiebreaker in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 15-13). The duo battled in the semifinal to try to face their teammates in the championship match, but lost in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 2-6 to send them to the third place match. Emery/Eisenbarth dominated in the Third Place match however 6-2, 6-1 to finish in 3rd.

All six athletes who participated will head to the State Championships, which will take place in Winfield at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center May 16-17.
