Bullpup Baseball Throws Combined No-Hitter, Splits Doubleheader at Circle

TOWANDA, Kan. – A day that saw miserable weather conditions for McPherson High School Baseball saw them split a league doubleheader against Circle on the road, using a combined no-hitter to win game one 3-2 before falling 8-1.

The Bullpups started game one on the right foot, scoring two runs on four hits to lead 2-0. Circle found the base paths in the second inning, drawing six walks on the game and capitalizing on wild pitches and four McPherson errors. The Thunderbirds tied the game in the third inning at 2-2.

McPherson bounced back to take the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Adrian Unruh. Unruh also threw the final four innings on the mound, earning the win. Huggard got a No Decision on the mound, but hit 3-4 offensively. Circle did not get a hit in the first game, while McPherson had six.

Circle had six hits in game two while also reaching on four McPherson errors, helping them win 8-1 to hand McPherson their second loss of the season. The T-Birds struck first with a run in the opening frame, but a six-run fourth inning helped them run away with the win.

McPherson had only two hits: A double by Carter Bengtson in the first inning where he was tagged out trying to stretch the hit into a triple, and an inside-the-park home run by Colt Chapman in the seventh inning. Chapman also struck out five batters, but got the loss on the mound. Circle’s Brody Coulter threw all seven innings, striking out nine batters.

McPherson moves to 10-2 on the season, 4-2 in AVCTL-3 play. Circle is now 7-6 on the season, 3-3 in league play.

The Bullpups will return home to face Mulvane on Friday, April 17. Mulvane is currently 8-0 on the season, 4-0 in AVCTL-3 play, and are ranked No. 1 in 4A by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches (KABC).
