LINDSBORG, Kan. (MacBulldogs.com) — The McPherson College women’s tennis team had a tremendous showing over the weekend at the KCAC Individual Championships.
In singles action, Camila Sanchez earned the No. 3 spot at No. 1 singles. She opened the tournament with an 8-5 victory over Valeria Rodriguez. She bested her foe by an 8-3 count to reach the title match, but lost a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 match, but earned the silver medal for her work.
At No. 2 singles, Taimi Nashiku won the three-six match-up against Nadia Margaritov by an 8-3 count on Friday. Nashiku lost an 8-4 contest in the semifinal but claimed third place by an 8-1 decision.
Vanessa Hofer grabbed the No. 3 seed and won her opening-round match by an 8-3 score over No. 11 Alexis Kersten. Hofer claimed a spot in the championship match with an 8-0 victory over the No. 2 seed and promptly won a 6-7, 7-0, 6-2 decision for the title over Jewel Henderson.
Top-seeded Alexandria Garcia claimed an 8-0 victory at No. 4 singles on Friday over Rowen Wiemers. Garcia did not lose a point en route to the championship match, where she ousted No. 2 Madeline Henderson by a score of 6-3, 6-3, for the title.
Laureen van Drun dispatched Lidia Bjelica by an 8-0 score as the top seed at No. 5 singles. After claiming an 8-2 victory in the semifinals, she posted a 6-1, 6-2 win in the championship over No. 2 Brooklynn Kuhn.
Ava Bolin earned the top spot at No. 6 singles and quickly won an 8-1 decision over No. 8 Madyson Kline Friday. She promptly won her draw, earning a spot in the championship by an 8-2 score. In the title match, Bolin bested her foe by a 6-0, 6-0 count.
In doubles play, Sanchez and Nashiku posted an 8-1 victory Friday in the top slot of No. 1 doubles. The tandem reached the championship match before falling short, earning a second-place finish.
Garcia and Hofer notched an 8-1 victory as the top seed at No. 2 doubles. The duo won their semifinal match by an 8-2 score and had an identical outcome in the championship, taking the title over Nancy Henderson and Madelin Henderson.
The duo of Isabella Ellerbee and Madison Dobson accounted for an 8-1 victory as the top seed at No. 3 doubles Friday evening. After losing Saturday morning, the team responded by claiming the bronze medal by an 8-0 score over Eliza Camp and Danielle Slack.
The Bulldogs return to action Friday, Sept. 20 at the ITA Regional Championship in Salina, Kan.
