Buhler Track & Field Does It Again: Girls and Boys Sweep Abilene Regional

ABILENE, Kan.— It’s been an impressive two-week stretch for Buhler track and field. At the league meet on May 16, the Crusaders stacked up 41 top-three finishes on their way to a convincing sweep. On Friday, the team competed at regionals in Abilene and easily outdistanced second-place Clay Center to capture both the girls’ and boys’ regional titles.

All totaled, Buhler athletes qualified for state in 14 girls’ and 9 boys’ events.

Laney Reiff will compete in both the 800-meter and 1600-meter runs at the state meet after placing second in both events at regionals.

Jenna Lackey punched her ticket to state in four events, including the 4×400 meter relay, 200-meter dash, and pole vault. Lackey cleared 10-00.00 to win pole vault. She was also part of the 4×100 relay team that broke a 29-year-old school record. Lackey and teammates Camryn Goertz, Aaliya Leving, and Sofia Spies won the regional final with a time of 49.08.

The Buhler boys swept the top two spots in the 100-meter hurdles at regionals, with Aidan Anderson hitting the finish line first and junior Zach Friesen placing second. Anderson also won at the 300 distance as part a 1-2-3 Buhler finish, with Landon Martinez second and Friesen third.

In just his freshman campaign, Garrett Gleason will compete at state in both the high jump and the long jump. He won both events at regionals.

In what is one of the greatest high school sports spectacles in the nation, more than 3,000 athletes from all classes in Kansas will compete at the State Track & Field Championship, held at WSU’s Cessna Stadium May 30-31.
