Buhler 66, Mulvane 21

MULVANE, Kan. – Buhler and Mulvane met on the football field for the 46th time last Friday in the second round of the Class 4A Playoffs. From the second quarter on, Buhler ran away with the contest, scoring the most points by either team in series history.

Behind a dominate performance from Buhler’s offense line, tailback Mitchel McDaniel carried the ball 21 times for a career-best 226 yards and four touchdowns.

“The offensive line has really come on strong,” Head Coach Steve Warner said. “Very physical. Mulvane didn’t have an answer for it.”

Fullback Nick Gazaway went over 100 yards rushing for the first time in his career, contributing to a team total of 552 yards on 34 carries. That’s good for fourth most in school history.

Including the four by McDaniel, the Crusaders scored nine touchdowns on 11 offensive drives and averaged an imposing 11.3 yards per play.

“I just feel like the line did a great job of opening up holes,” McDaniel said. “I had several runs where I didn’t even get touched.”

After a couple of early scores, Buhler’s defense held Mulvane out of the end zone until late in the fourth quarter. Linebacker Will Hanen led the charge with 18 tackles. Hanen’s 327 career tackles are just 14 behind Jhet Burkhart for third most in school history.

The win earns Buhler (8-2) a trip to Wamego (9-1) for the sectional playoff round this coming Friday.
