Blue Dragon Women clinch 34th 20-Win season with win over NO.6 Dodge City

The No. 19-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team earned a statement victory on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena, defeating No. 6 Dodge City 60-51 to secure the program’s 34th 20-win season in team history.

The Blue Dragons improved to 20-5 overall and 15-4 in the KJCCC standings, while handing the Conquistadors (20-3, 16-3 KJCCC) their third loss of the season and tightening the race near the top of the conference standings.

Noelle Anthon led the Blue Dragons with 17 points and 12 rebounds, recording her second double-double of the season. KaMyra Barber added 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Katie Duncan scored 10 points with seven rebounds and four steals. Whitney Brown added eight points and three assists.

The Blue Dragons shot 37.1 percent from the field (23 of 62) and outrebounded Dodge City 49-27, including 19 offensive rebounds that helped Hutchinson control tempo and second-chance scoring opportunities.

Dodge City was led by Manuela Piljevic with 16 points and eight rebounds, including four 3-pointers. Jolie Mantz added 10 points, and Savi Mi finished with nine points and four assists.

The Blue Dragons limited the Conquistadors to 34.0 percent shooting (18 of 53), including 8 of 27 from 3-point range and 7 of 9 from the foul line. The Blue Dragons forced 19 turnovers.

The Blue Dragons battled through a defensive first quarter that featured multiple lead changes and six combined turnovers. Hutchinson closed the opening period on a KaMyra Barber tip-in to take a 9-8 lead.

The Dragons maintained momentum in the second quarter as Delora Pricop knocked down an early jumper to regain the lead. Hutchinson extended its advantage late in the half behind strong rebounding and defensive pressure to carry a 28-26 lead into halftime.

Hutchinson created separation in the third quarter. The Blue Dragons held Dodge City to 10 points in the period while Anthon controlled the paint on both ends of the floor. A buzzer-beating banked-in 3-pointer from 27 feet by Jamya McPherson extends the Dragon lead to 44-36.

The Dragons continued to hold Dodge City at arm’s length in the final quarter. Barber and Duncan combined for key baskets midway through the period as Hutchinson maintained its lead and secured their victory.
