Blue Dragon Volleyball Swept by Tyler in Classic Opener

Alondra Villanueva posted her sixth double-double of the season in the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team’s opening match of the Blue Dragon Volleyball Classic at the Sports Arena.

The Blue Dragons were swept by Tyler Junior College 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-14) in Match 1 of 4 over the weekend. Hutchinson (9-9) played Iowa Western later in the day on Friday.

Villanueva had 13 kills on 26 assists, hitting .269 to lead the Blue Dragons. Villanueva had 10 digs and one block assist.

For the match, Hutchinson was out-hit by Tyler .196-.044. Tyler had 37 kills to the Blue Dragons’ 29.

Sophomore Kierny Follmer was next for the Blue Dragons with four kills. Priscilla RaschenMattie GalliherJaylynn McNeill and Nathalia Ferreira had three kills each.

Sophomore setter Angela Reupena finished with 14 assists and a team-high two service aces. Freshman setter Alexandra Garcia had 10 assists.

The Blue Dragons out-dug Tyler 51-43, but the Apaches out-blocked the Dragons 6-4.

Freshman libero Clara Oliveira finished with 25 digs. Galliher and McNeill had three blocks each.

Natalia Roszewska and Maranatha Silafau had nine kills each to lead Tyler.

Set 1: The Dragons jumps out to a 7-3 lead after a McNeill/Galliher double block. The lead grew to six at 10-4 after a Villanueva kill. The Apaches then scored on 15 of the next 21 rallies to take a 19-6 lead after one of the Blue Dragons’ seven attack errors in the set. A Villanueva kill tied the set at 20, but Tyler scored three straight to take change. Tyler’s third ace of the set came on set point and the Apaches won 25-21.

Set 2: The second set took much the same form as the first set. A Raschen kill and back-to-back Tyler hitting errors gave Hutchinson a 9-3 lead. Tyler turned the set around with a 12-4 run to take a 15-13 lead. Kills from Follmer and Villanueva tied the set at 15-15, but the Apaches scored on 6 of the next 7 rallies. The Dragons out-hit Tyler 12-11 in kills, but the Dragons had nine attack errors in a 25-21 setback.

Set 3: The Apaches opened the third set with a 7-0 run. A Villanueva kill cut the deficit to 8-4 and the Dragons got within three at 13-10 after a Tyler attack error. Hutchinson was held to .000 hitting in the third set, while Tyler hit .256 in a decisive 25-14 win to complete the sweep of the Blue Dragons.
