Hutchinson CC Sports Information
The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team earned its first victory since January 7 and upset a nationally ranked opponent in the process Wednesday night.
The Blue Dragon men snap[ed an eight-game skid after a 67-61 victory against No. 24 Dodge City Hutchinson Sports Arena.
Hutchinson improved to 11-14 overall and 6-13 in the KJCCC. Dodge City dropped to 15-9 and 11-7 in conference play.
Hutchinson swept Dodge City in the season series.
The Blue Dragons were led by sophomore Daleron Thomas, who led all scorers with 19 points, going 8 of 12 from the floor, adding one 3-pointer.
Chudier Dorar was another big contributor for Hutchinson, posting his second double-double of the season, with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Dorar also added three blocks and a steal.
Bobby Cannon added 10 points and eight rebounds. Lolo Rudolph had eight points with a pair of 3-pointers.
Hutchinson shot 43.9 percent (25 of 57) from the floor and 36.8 percent (7 of 19) from 3-point range. The Dragons got to the line 13 times, hitting 10. Despite having more turnovers than Dodge City, Hutchinson outscored Dodge off turnovers 20-15. The Dragons owned a 41-37 rebounding advantage.
Dodge City finished the game shooting 34.8 percent (23 of 66) from the floor. The Conquistadors hit only 4 of 21 from 3-point range); all of the makes came from Andrew Mabry. Dodge City went 11 of 17 at the free throw line. Dodge outscored Hutchinson in the paint, 34-20, and on second-chance points 16-11.
Dodge City was led by Rickey Loftin II with 16 points, going 7 of 16 from the floor, also contributing six rebounds and three assists. Hutchinson held the league’s leading scorer, Derrick Rivers, to 11 points on 2 of 13 from the field.
Both teams held leads in the first 12 minutes of the game. The last lead change came with 7:57 remaining in the first half when Thomas knocked down a jumper to make it 16-15. Hutchinson led the rest of half, taking a 35-23 lead at halftime.
Hutchinson led by as many as 14 in the second half, holding a double-digit lead until the 12:58 mark of the second half. From that mark, Dodge went on a 9-0 run to cut the Hutchinson lead to 48-43 with 11:11 left.
Dodge City got the game within three points at 64-61 with 1:29 left, but Anthony Alston‘s 3-pointer with 15 seconds left was the final dagger as Hutchinson built a 67-61 lead.
Hutchinson will head to Concordia at 4 p.m. Saturday to play the Cloud County Thunderbirds at Arley Bryant Gymnasium.
