Hutchinson CC Sports Information
ARKANSAS CITY – The Hutchinson Community College men’s basketball team kept it close and but fell on the final possession of the game 63-60 to Cowley Saturday at William S. Scott Auditorium in Arkansas City.
Hutchinson drops to 10-14 overall, and 5-13 in the KJCCC. With the win Cowley improves to 15-8, and 10-7 in conference play.
The Blue Dragons had three players in double figures Saturday. Daleron Thomas had a team-high 15 points. Kordell Williams tied a season-high with 11 points. Anthony Alston dropped 10 points off the bench and added a pair of 3-pointers.
As a team Hutchinson shot 43.4% from the floor, going 23 for 53. The Dragons also shot 36.8% from beyond the arc (7-19) and were 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.
Hutchinson outscored Cowley off the bench 24-14.
Cowley shot 39.7% (25 of 63) from the floor, and 26.3% from three (5-19). Cowley got to the free-throw line 10 times, scoring on eight. Cowley outdueled Hutchinson in the paint, 30-24. Cowley also snatched 10 offensive rebounds, compared to Hutchinson’s six.
Cowley was led by Marcus Smith, who was tied with Daleron Thomas for the game-high, with 15. Leslie Owens Jr. added 12 points, and Roman Miller tacked on 11.
Despite keeping the game close, Hutchinson didn’t hold its first lead until the 7:34 mark of the first half when a 6-0 run gave Hutchinson a 17-14 advantage. Cowley answered with a 10-0 run to provide the Tigers with their largest lead of the night at 24-17. Anthony Alston hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left in the first half to make it a one-point lead for Cowley at halftime, 28-27.
After leading 40-39 with 14:01 remaining in regulation, Hutchinson wouldn’t lead again; the Blue Dragons tied the game at 54-54 with 5:09 left with a Williams 3-pointer.
With 18 seconds left in regulation, the Blue Dragons put the Tigers on the free-throw line where Xavier Vickerstaff missed the second of a one-and-one. Williams grabbed the defensive rebound, setting up a chance for the Blue Dragons’ final possession, but it resulted in a turnover as the final horn sounded.
Hutchinson hosts Dodge City on Wednesday, Feb. 11th at the Hutchinson Sports Arena, tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m.
Game Notes – Hutchinson drops to 91-51 in the all-time series against Cowley, including 32-27 in Arkansas City. Hutchinson drops its eighth consecutive contest. Kordell Williams scored in double-digits for the second time this season. Daleron Thomas reached double digits for the 10th time this season. Anthony Alston also scored in double figures for the eighth time this season.
