HOBBS, New Mexico – The Hutchinson Community College women’s track and field program was started in 1976. The Blue Dragon men’s program was established in 1930.

Through that span of time, no two Blue Dragon track and field athletes accomplished what Xylavene Beale and Deisheline Mayer Scott did on Friday at the 2026 NJCAA Division I Track and Field Championships at the Ross Black Track and File Complex.

Beale and Mayer Scott finished first and second in the shot put on Friday to become the first-ever Blue Dragon athletes, female or male, to finish No 1 and No. 2 in a single event at a national championship in the program’s entire history.

Beale won her second national championship of 2026 with a school-record mark of 52-8 3/4. She also won the 2026 NJCAA Indoor shot put title in March.

The freshman from Albury, Australia beat her own Blue Dragon shot put record of 51-7 1/4 set at the Tabor College Invitational on April 11.

Beale is the first Blue Dragon to win a national shot put title since Esther Ikomi in 1989 and she is the fifth overall outdoor national champion in program history. Beale is the first Blue Dragon women’s outdoor national champion since Blue Dragon Quarterback Club Hall of Famer Kristi Rinehart won the high jump in 1997.

Mayer Scott continued her outstanding 2026 outdoor championship with a national runner-up finish after a career-best attempt of 48-7 3/4, the second-best mark in Blue Dragon outdoor history.

After back-to-back fifth-place performances on Thursday in the hammer and javelin, Mayer Scott scored eight more points for the Dragons to give her a total of 16 points through two days.

Mayer Scott, a sophomore from Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, is the first Blue Dragon national runner-up since Leeza Henry in 2010 and is the 16th overall Hutchinson national individual runner-up.

One other school record was broken on Friday when Anecia Campbell broke her own Blue Dragon record in the 200-meter preliminaries. She ran a time of 23.55, which was 10th in qualifying and Campbell did not make Saturday’s finals. Campbell broke her own record of 24.35 seconds set at the Region 6 Outdoor Championships two weeks ago.

Freshman Ashara Frater moved onto Saturday’s finals in the 1,500 meters. She posted the seventh-fastest time in the preliminary round on Friday with a time of 4:44.78.

Rosa Min Poulsen was the other Blue Dragon to compete on Friday. She finished 14th after clearing 5-0 3/4.

The Blue Dragons that fell on Friday are the 23rd and 24th outdoor record to fall this season and counting the indoor season, the Blue Dragon women have broken 42 records.

The Blue Dragons are fifth in the team standings after 10 of 22 events with 37 points. Iowa Western leads with 64 points. New Mexico Junior College is second with 44.50 points.
