Baseball Dragons Open Plains District Tourney Tuesday vs. Cowley

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (BlueDragonSports.com) – One year ago, the Hutchinson Community College baseball team made a magical run in the Plains District (Region 6) Tournament that went all the way to the second championship game.

The Blue Dragons hope to take that extra step this season when the eight-team, double-elimination 2025 Plains District Tournament opens on Tuesday at Dean Evans Stadium in Salina.

The fifth-seeded Blue Dragons (39-19) will play No. 4-seed Cowley (43-10) in the fourth opening-round game of the day at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Hutchinson-Cowley winner will play the Barton-Coffeyville winner at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in a winner’s bracket game. The Blue Dragon-Tiger loser will meet the Cougar-Red Raven loser in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.

The other opening-round matchups are: 10 a.m. – No. 3 Cloud County vs. No. 6 Kansas City; 1 p.m. – No. 2 Johnson County vs. No. 10 Fort Scott; 4 p.m. – No. 1 Barton vs. No. 8 Coffeyville.

The Plains District championship game is set for 4 p.m. on Friday with an If Necessary game at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Plains District winner qualifies for the 2025 NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Blue Dragons and Tigers meet twice in the 2025 regular season. Hutchinson lost 6-4 on March 11 at Hobart-Detter Field and 17-3 on April 28 at Arkansas City.

In the 2024 Plains District Tournament at Eck Stadium in Wichita, the Blue Dragons eliminated the Tigers 8-6 in a third-round elimination game.

Tuesday’s meeting will be the ninth postseason meeting between Hutchinson and Cowley dating back to when the current postseason format began in 2004. The postseason series between the Blue Dragons and Tigers is tied at 4-4.

All games will be available on videostream on the KJCCC Network, which is a pay-per-view service. Admission to Dean Evans Stadium in $10 per day.
