Barton Women Unable to Overcome Second Half Woes in Loss at Coffeyville

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. (BartonSports.com) – The Barton Community College women’s basketball team found themselves on the wrong end of a 32-13 second half Saturday afternoon as the Cougars fell at Coffeyville Community College, 62-42, inside Gelmer K. Nellis Hall.

Combining for just seven points over the opening five minutes, the Cougars held their lone quarter lead 11-8 after the opening 10-minutes before trailing by one, 30-29 at the halftime break.

The tide quickly turned in the third quarter following Vera Ojenuwa‘s bucket giving Barton it’s final lead 31-30, with Coffeyville producing a 10-0 run before extending to a 16-2 stretch building out a 46-35 lead heading into the final frame.

Holding Barton to just six points in the third quarter, the Red Ravens nearly matched it holding the Cougars to seven in the final frame to avenge its’ earlier season loss in Great Bend.

Splitting the season series, the loss keeps the Cougars in third place in the league standings at 14-6 and 19-7 overall while the Red Ravens move a game back of fourth place at 12-7 in conference and 16-9 overall.

Barton hits the bye week before hosting Garden City Community next Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.

Grace John was the lone Cougar reaching double-figure scoring with 10 points hitting two of Barton’s four three-pointers made.

Dominating the glass with a plus-13 advantage in the first go-around, Barton would be outrebounded for just the fifth time this year and season lowest mark minus-16. Ojenuwa led the Cougars on the boards with 10 rebounds while held to a season low five points. Vivian Onugha fell two points shy of double-figures adding eight and held to a season low two rebounds.

Quezia Bertoni added six points, five rebounds and dished out two of Barton’s five assists.

Outscored 20-10 off the bench, Darby Smith and Jaci Vonlintel combined for all 10 points with Smith adding eight and Vonlintel contributing two points

Ivy Fox led two Red Ravens in double figures with 21 points on 8-of-20 shooting with six rebounds. Tetona Woods-Blackowl dished out nine of Coffeyville’s 19 assists to add to her 11 points while Jae’Mya Lyons finished with a bench high nine points.
