Lyons 21, Republic County 20 – Will Miller made a game-saving tackle on a Republic County attempted two-point conversion with 1 minute, 14 seconds left in the fourth quarter, preserving a win for the Lions.
Lyons quarterback Ethan Luck had touchdown runs of 17 and 3 yards in the second half, while freshman Zander Young also had a touchdown.
Lyions moves to 1-2 and will take on Ellsworth next week.
Hutchinson 21, Maize 0 –Â The Salthawks posted their second straight shutout, and also held their second straight opponent to fewer than 100 yards as the Salthawks earned their first road win of the season.
Kade Smith led the Hutchinson offense by carrying the ball 33 times for 196 yards and two touchdowns. His 58-yard scamper early in the third quarter doubled Hutchinson’s lead to 14-0.
Terrell King added the final touchdown and 46 rushing yards.
Hutch improves to 2-1 and will head to Salina South next week.
Central Christian 48, Stafford 0 –Â Central Christian waited out a 90-minute rain delay Friday night, and took less time than that to take a win over Stafford in Hutchinson.
Ry Kooiman rushed for touchdowns of 11 and 54 yards in the first quarter, where Central Christian picked up 14 points due to special teams play on punts. In both cases the snaps went over the head of Stafford punter Jacob Simmons. Jayden Linschield picked up a loose ball and carried in for a touchdown, and on the other the Cougars took over on the Trojan 3-yard line where Nathan Reed ran it in for the score.
Reed would rush for a second touchdown of the same yardage in the second quarter after a 71-yard rush by Kooiman and complete a 19 yard touchdown pass to Cael Kooiman to wrap up the scoring.
The Cougars, now 2-1 on the season, travel to Fairfield next week while Stafford, which fell to 1-2, will take on Macksville.
Sterling 21, Inman 20 – Sterling Black Bears edged Inman Teutons at Inman. The Teutons struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Caleb Bigler punched in a 1-yard touchdown, but Sterling quickly responded, as running back Zane Farney broke free for a 21-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 6-6.
The Black Bears capitalized on a critical defensive play late in the first half when Wyatt Newberry intercepted a pass and returned it 42 yards to set up quarterback Logan Isaac, who found Boston Ekart on a 13-yard touchdown pass with 26 seconds remaining in the half. Sterling took a 14-6 lead into halftime, but Inman responded in the third quarter with a 24-yard touchdown run by Braxton Murphy, cutting the lead to 14-12. However, Sterling answered right back as Dillan Burgess broke free for a 19-yard touchdown run with 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter, extending Sterling’s lead to 21-12.
Inman quickly responded once again when Malachi Brunk returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown, bringing the Teutons within a point at 21-20 as the third quarter ended. Despite the furious comeback, Sterling’s defense held strong in the final quarter to preserve the narrow victory.
Zane Farney led the Black Bears’ ground attack with a 153 yards on 27 carries, while Isaac added 51 yards on 17 carries and threw for a touchdown. Newberry made a huge impact on both sides of the ball, rushing for 75 yards on eight carries and grabbing two key interceptions. Sterling is 1-2 and Inman 2-1.
Kinsley 64, St. John 58, 3OT – After losing on virtually the final play of the game in Week 2, the Kinsley Coyotes got redemption in Week 3, winning on the literal final play of the game in a 64-58 triple overtime victory at St. John. Each team scored twice within the first 4:12 of the game as it was tied at 14 after 1. A back and forth affair saw the teams knotted at 44 at the end of regulation. Each team scored a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the first overtime, while both teams scored in the second overtime, but missed their two-point tries.
After the Kinsley defense held St. John out of the end zone to open the third overtime, freshman QB Josh Stuckey ran the ball down to the Tiger 1-yard line on the first offensive play for the Coyotes and he followed with a one-yard QB sneak for a walk-off touchdown. Stuckey finished with 151 yards on 28 carries with four touchdowns. Emilio Rodriguez also scored four touchdowns for the Coyotes and added 106 yards on 20 carries. Kinsley ran the ball 68 times on the night for 352 yards. St. John QB Braxton Alpers continued his great start to the season with 19 carries for 128 yards and four scores while adding two touchdown passes in the loss. Both teams are now 2-1.
