Haven girls rally against Wichita Trinity, Wildcat boys fall to Knights

The Haven High School girls basketball team came from behind to defeat Wichita Trinity Academy 51-45 Friday night at the Haven gymnasium.

Avery Brawner led the Wildcats with 22 points. Rilynn Patry scored 13 points.

The Haven Wildcat boys lost to the WTA Knights 55-44.

Halstead teams split contests with Augusta

The Halstead High School Dragon girls basketball team opened the 2026 portion of their schedule by defeating Augusta 43-41 on the road  Friday night at Augusta.

Halstead led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Orioles outscored the Dragons 10-3 in the second quarter to trail at halftime 19-17.

The Dragons outscored the Orioles 10-7 in the third frame to lead 29-24, but were outscored 17-14 in the fourth quarter.

The Halstead High School boys basketball team lost to Augusta 59-31 Friday night at Augusta.

Augusta led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter, 32-17 at halftime and 40-26 after three periods. The host Orioles outscored the Dragons 19-5 in the fourth quarter.

Augusta’s Brody Haskell hit five 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 21 points. Owen Roberts made two 3-pointers and had 12 points.

Mario Diaz led the Halstead boys with 10 points.

The Halstead boys dropped to 3-5.

Hutchinson Central Christian teams split with St. John

The St. John High School boys basketball team went on 7-0 scoring run to post a hard-fought 45-39 non-league victory over Hutchinson Central Christian Friday.

St. John (5-2) was led by Braxton Alpers (12) and Emmett Delp (11). Central Christian (4-4) was paced by Luke Eigsti (12) and Piercen Huff (11).

The  Hutchinson Central Christian girls basketball team (7-1) trailed 34-31 with 4:47 left in the game, but the Cougars went on a 13-0 scoring run.

Cougar standout Jessa Losew scored three baskets, Avery Kauffman converted a banked 3-pointer and Avery Duft and Ava Newcome scored baskets for a 44-34 lead. Losew and Newcome scored layups directly off Tiger turnovers.

The St. John girls (3-4) closed the gap in the final minutes with a 9-3 run but fell short.

Kauffman led the Cougars with 15 points and Losew added 12. Regan Bonner led St. John with 12 points.

Cheney girls, boys sweep Nickerson squads

The Cheney High School girls basketball team defeated Nickerson 71-8 Friday night at Cheney.

Cheney led 45-2 at halftime.

Raegan Black led the Cheney girls with 16 points. Katy Wehrman scored 10 points, followed by Karlie Inslee with 9.

Kenna Haggard and Jayanna Cornejo led Nickerson with 3 points each and Aleah Collins scored 2.

The Cheney boys basketball team completed the varsity sweep for Cardinal squads with an 83-50 victory over Nickerson.

The Cardinal boys led the Panthers 18-13 after one quarter, 40-20 at halftime and 62-43 at the end of the third quarter. Cheney outscored Nickerson 18-7 in the fourth quarter.

The Cheney Cardinals improved to 5-4. The Nickerson boys fell to 1-6.

Colby sweeps Larned girls, boys

The Colby Eagles swept the Learned girls and boys basketball teams Friday night at the Colby Event Center.

The Larned girls lost 36-35 and the Larned boys lost 75-51.

In the boys game, Colby’s Jordan Jones scored 40 points and now has scored more than 1,000 career points.

Hoisington Cardinal varsity teams down Russell

The Hoisington Cardinal girls and boys basketball teams kicked off the new year with a home sweep over Russell Friday night.

The Cardinal varsity girls improved their record to 4-1 with a 53-34 win. The Hoisington varsity boys posted a 52-43 win over the Russell Broncos.

Hoisington boys basketball coach Kyle Haxton earned his 200th victory.

The Hoisington junior varsity boys basketball team also defeated Russell. The score was not posted online.

In the varsity boys game, Hoisington’s Mason Martin scored 21 points and Carson Mason added 13.

Russell’s Sam Theilen, who averages 20 points a game, scored all of his 14 points in the second half to paced the Broncos.

The Cardinal boys (4-2) open Central Kansas League play Tuesday against Smoky Valley. Russell dropped to 3-3.

In the varsity girls game, Hoisington’s Tianna Lutters converted four 3-pointers and scored 20 points.

Kelsi Maier (15) and Marley Bittel (12) scored in double figures for Hoisington. The Cardinals outscored the Broncos 23-9 in the second quarter.

The Hoisington Cardinal girls (4-1) open Central Kansas League play against Smoky Valley. Russell is 0-7.
