Area Boys Tennis Teams Find Success at Regionals

It was a busy weekend for Ad Astra Radio area tennis teams as many athletes have qualified for state tournaments in their respective classes.

Buhler hosted a 4A Regional and two singles players and three doubles teams from the area are headed to the 4A State meet in Winfield May 16 & 17.  Buhler’s Davian Spies cruised to a regional title, giving up just one game through the tournament.  After a first round bye, he posted two straight 6-0, 6-0 wins and then beat Hesston’s Janmejay Patwardhan 6-0, 6-1 in the championship match.  Patwardhan is also headed to state.  In doubles, Hesston’s team of Asher Deutschendorf and Braiden Liechty cruised to straight set wins in their first two matches.  In a tough championship battle, they defeated Adam Everett & Jackson Davis of Winfield 6-3, 5-7, 6-2.  Buhler’s Von Woleslagel and Reuben Harder finished in third place and their teammates Titus Bortzfield and Jaxton Gillette finished sixth to qualify for state.  The Crusaders also took home the team title.

In the 4A Scott City Regional, McPherson cruised to the team title, finishing first and second in singles and first and third in doubles.  In singles, Cooper Bohme picked up two straight 6-0, 6-1 wins to move to the championship where he faced his Bullpup teammate Owen Neighbors.  Neighbors cruised to a first round win and won a tie-breaker in the semis.  In the title match, Bohme beat Neighbors 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.  In doubles, Bryson Archer and Alex Berger ran through to the title match without losing a game.  In the championship, they beat Brody Strine and Brody Stoecklein of Scott City 6-1, 6-1 for the gold.  Jonas Emery and Mason Eisenbarth finished in third for the Bullpups to qualify for state.

Two singles players and a doubles team from the southeast area of Ad Astra Radio are headed to 4A State as well.  Mosiah Fawson of Iola finished in third place and Arthur Schmitt of Chanute took sixth place at the 4A Regional in Parsons.  Chanute’s Ethan Burnett & Ayden Cummings took fourth place.

In 3-2-1A at the Wichita Collegiate Regional, three doubles teams from the area broke through to the state meet.  Smoky Valley’s Gabe and Zeke Baker teamed up to finish third place.  In the fifth place match, Brady Peterson and Devin Boice of Haven defeated Jack Bieker and Pierce Keller of Smoky Valley, but both teams qualified for state.

Multiple area teams were competing and had success at the 3-2-1A Conway Springs Regional.  Central Plains brought home the team title and qualified all of their participants for state individually.  Camden Stiles was the singles champion as he gave up just one game into the championship match.  He defeated Jace Darnauer of Sterling 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 for the gold medal.  Darnauer finished second and qualified for state.  Fred Cheun of Lyons qualified in fourth, Grey Ringwald of Ellinwood finished fifth and Calde Thompson of Central Plains was sixth.  In doubles, Paxton and Peyton Dody took home the silver medal at regionals.  In a tough championship battle, they fell to Layne Whitney and Isaac Winter of Conway Springs 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.  Other doubles state qualifiers were Ben Bierstedt and Zac Wohler of Sterling in third place, Nethan Cauthon and Alden Metro of Central Plains in fourth and Ty Hammeke and Ethan Schlochtermaier of Ellinwood in fifth.

In the west 3-2-1A Regional at Meade, Hoisington qualified all of their participants for state and finished in second place as a team by just one point behind Phillipsburg.  Jasper Pawlowski of Hoisington took home the singles title with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Samuel Lynn of Meade in the championship.  Brody Rossman finished third for Hoisington.  On the doubles court, Gabe Pawlowski and Leyton Mooney of Hoisington beat their Cardinal teammates Kian Delong and Alexander Mooney if the fifth place match, but both teams will head to state.

Rounding out 3-2-1A, Hillsboro had to make the trek east to Topeka.  Casen Steinert took fifth place in singles and qualified for state.

3-2-1A qualifiers will compete at the 3-2-1A State meet at the Kossover Tennis Center in Topeka this Friday and Saturday.

Area 5A teams were at the Goddard-Eisenhower Regional.  Newton took home first place as a team and will send all of their participants to the 5A State meet in Salina.  In singles, Emilio Ormazo-Cantos finished in second place and Ethan Downey was fourth place for the Railers.  Emerson Gering and Nathaniel Haines took the gold medal in doubles for Newton, beating Liam Deniau-Young and Owen Leaonard of Salina Central in the title match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.  Adam Oswald and Gavin Hadley finished in third place for Newton.
