WINFIELD, Kan. – It was a successful weekend for many Ad Astra Radio boys tennis players at the 4A State Tournament at the T.H. Vaughan Tennis Center.  On the singles side, Buhler’s Davian cruised to the state championship and in doubles, Asher Deutschendorf & Braiden Liechty of Hesston were the last ones standing.

After a first round bye, Spies swept Evan Bombardier of Concordia 6-0, 6-0 and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Copeland Quiett of Winfield.  Another 6-0, 6-0 win over Keith Sanders of Independence put Spies into the championship match where he rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Wyatt Shultz of Parsons.  In his four wins, Spies lost just five games combined.  He finished the season with a 29-2 record.  The state title was the second straight for the Crusader junior as he defeated Shultz in 2024 as well.

Deutschendorf and Liechty had a similar run to the championship match in doubles.  They opened with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Boldra and Koenigsman of Concordia and then won 6-0, 6-3 over Scott and McLenon of Independence.  In the semifinals, they registered a 6-1, 6-2 win over Blaser and George of Topeka-Hayden.  The championship match proved to be one of the toughest this season for the pair, but they escaped with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 tiebreak win over Adam Everett and Jackson Davis of Winfield.  Deutschendorf, a senior, and Liechty, a junior, finished their season with a record of 29-3.

Other area 4A State medalists included Hesston’s Janmejay Patwardhan in fifth place and Cooper Bohme of McPherson in 12th.  Buhler’s doubles team of Von Woleslagel and Reuben Harder took third place, beating Blaser and George of Topeka-Hayden 6-2, 6-4 in the consolation match, while Bryson Archer and Alex Berger of McPherson finished fifth, winning 9-7 over Ethan Burnett and Ayden Cummings of Chanute.

In the team standings, Parsons and Winfield tied for the championship with 29 points, while Buhler was just one point behind with 28, bringing home third place.
