ANDALE, Kan. — Strong showings continue for Andale Athletics last week.
Volleyball
The fourth-ranked team in Class 4A had a strong week beginning with a sweep over Clearwater (25-14, 25-9) and Circle (25-19, 25-22). The Indians traveled to Valley Center on Saturday for a competitive nine-team invitational and finished second. In pool play, Andale opened with a 25-20, 25-19 victory over Kapaun Mt. Carmel, followed by a 25-21, 25-9 victory over Emporia. In Gold pool play, Andale defeated Valley Center, 25-15, 25-17, before seeing its undefeated season end against Bishop Carroll, 25-20, 15-25, 20-25. Andale (12-1) will travel to El Dorado on Tuesday for a triangular with the Wildcats and Collegiate.
Cross Country
The boys cross country team won the large class of the Swather Special with 17 points, winning by five points over Garden City. Jack Cutler finished second in the senior large boys race in 16 minutes and 58 seconds, while Matt Zollinger finished 15th (24:19.9). In the junior large boys race, Dustin Buchanan finished second (18:25.5), Rhett Romero was eighth (20:21.7, Ethan Simon finished 10th (21:10.9). Cavin Schueller was 19th (22:27.1).In the sophomore race, Roman Lubbers finished second (18:41) and Cade Brown and Will Parks finished fourth and fifth (19:11.7 and 19:19.4) Levi Schmidt won the freshman race in 19:36.9. Marcus Simon was 12th (23:06.3). Ronin Staley finished 22nd (29:43.8). The girls cross country team finished fourth with 28 points finishing behind Newton, Garden City and Dodge City. Emma Meyer finished fifth in the senior race with a time of 24:34.5 and Kate Eck finished 16th (30:32.6). In the junior race, Olivia Steven finished fifth (24:39). In the sophomore race, Miriam Mazzarelli finished third (24:19.5). In the freshman race, Ayvah Banda finished second with a time of 23:04.5, finishing .1 behind Newton’s Brooklyn Fast. Carlin Seier finished 13th (28:24.9), Mabel Smarsh finished 16th (29:57.2), Lucy Seiler 20th (31:59.2) and Melody Fulfur finished 23rd (37:14.3). Andale will travel to Buhler on Thursday.
Girls Golf
Jacee Mattox led Andale with a 12th-place finish with a round of 75 at the Andover Central Invitational at Sierra Hills Golf Club. Sadie Aylward finished in a tie for 21st with an 81. Billie Jo Chaffin was 25th with an 82. Peyton Jantz finished in a tie for 333rd with an 87. Ali Wegerer shot a 96, good for a tie for 56th. Eva Krehbiel finished 67th with a 101. As a team, Andale was sixth with a 325. Andale will head to Wellington on Monday.
