ANDALE, Kan. — The Andale/Garden Plain baseball team opened up its home schedule with a sweep over Winfield on Tuesday at the Andale High School Sports Complex.
Andale/Garden Plain took the opener, 10-2, before rallying from a 2-0 deficit in the nightcap for a 12-2 victory in five innings.
In game one, Andale/Garden Plain jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Jared Flax had an RBI single with Greyson Winter adding a 2-run double. Austin Bugner’s 2-run triple in the third inning made it 5-0. Winter tallied his second double and Nolan Pfannensteil added an RBI single for a 7-0 lead in the fifth. Winfield avoided the shutout with a run in the sixth, before Andale/Garden Plain scored three in the sixth, a 2-run single from Flax and an RBI double from Winter. The Vikings added their final run in the seventh.
Jamey Joplin got the win on the mound, going six innings, allowing one run on four hits and recording four strikeouts. Winter went 3-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs.
In game two, Winfield scored both of its runs in the first inning off a wild pitch and an RBI single. Andale/Garden Plain sent 10 to the plate in the second inning to take a 5-2 advantage. The 5-run second was highlighted by an RBI double from Winter and RBI singles from Flax, Noah Stanley, and Easton Rieger. The fourth inning was a carbon copy of the second, with five runs coming across; however, Andale/Garden Plain did it, capitalizing on multiple Winfield errors and a sacrifice fly from Cruz Kaiser. Rieger ended the game with a walk-off 2-run single in the fifth via run-rule.
Ashtin Harp got the win in relief on the mound, going 2 ⅓ innings and recording five strikeouts. Rieger went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
