ANDALE, Kan. — The Andale boys basketball team needed to overcome an 8-point deficit in the second half against Augusta in a Class 4A Sub-State Championship game on Saturday.
Andale defeated Augusta, 53-45, to improve to 18-5 on the season.
Augusta led 15-12 after one and held a 25-21 lead at halftime. The Orioles led 33-25 before Jack Horsch scored six consecutive points to cut the deficit to 33-31. Augusta got back up 35-31 before Andale took its first lead since 5-3 with back-to-back 3-pointers by Noah Stanley and Cruz Kaiser. Augusta responded with the final four points of the quarter to take a 39-37 lead heading into the fourth.
Hunter Grimes tied the game at 39 to start the fourth, followed by a layup by Sam Harp that gave the Indians a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Augusta cut the deficit to one early after an Andale technical foul, but the Indians responded with an 8-0 run to lead 49-40. Augusta scored five in a row, but couldn’t get any closer.
Harp led Andale with 17 points, while Horsch scored all of his 11 points in the second half and Caden Fowler scored 10.
Andale is set to be the No. 5 seed in the Class 4A State Tournament. The Indians will play Hugoton in a quarterfinal on Wednesday at a time and site to be determined by KSHSAA on Sunday afternoon.
