There really wasn’t much doubt that Caleb Muehler was going to finish his high school cross country career in style.
Pretty much all Muehler knew during his four years at McPherson was winning.
He was the Class 4A state champion as a sophomore.
He was the 4A champion as a junior.
He won seven of nine races his senior year, including the AVCTL Division 3 meet and the 4A regional.
Although it wasn’t a foregone conclusion and far from easy, Muehler finished in style at the state meet in Wamego. He battled Wamego’s Peyton Parker all the way to the end, edging Parker with a time on the 5,000-meter course of 15 minutes, 54.28 seconds. That won by less than a second, and nobody else was under 16:11.
“Caleb has made huge contributions to the cross country program during his high school career,” said McPherson coach Nikolous Rempe. “Not only has he won three state titles, but he also helped lead the McPherson boys team to a third-place finish at last year’s state meet.
Caleb is an incredibly driven and smart runner, who is always willing to put in the extra work that is needed to be successful. His leadership skills have helped elevate the program and his
teammates to a higher standard during his high school career.”
Muehler’s season-best time was 15:53.
He will be back on the track in the spring, where Muehler has won 10 medals already. He plans to race in college, but has not yet decided where that will be.
