Each month, Ad Astra Radio recognizes a girls and boys Team of the Month, selected from area high schools. The Girls Team of the Month for January goes to the Halstead Girls Basketball team.
The month: Halstead continued to pile up the wins with a perfect January. The Dragons went 8-0, beating several larger schools, including Class 4A Augusta and Pratt, and Class 5A Valley Center. Halstead capped the month with a 61-39 win over Cheney in the Haven Wildcat Classic championship game. The reigning Class 3A champion, coached by Derek Schutte, continues to use balance in most areas. Addison Wills, Piper Schroeader, Jordy Schroeder, Onnyka Nedich and Bailey Bernal have all led the team in scoring this season. The top-ranked Dragons force 25 turnovers a game, and only Augusta and Hesston have scored more than 40 points in a single game.
