The TBT Basketball Tournament released their regional seedings and matchups for the first round of the $1 million winner-take-all tournament. Alumni teams from KU, K-State, and Wichita State Men’s Basketball will be participating in the tournament.
In years past, all three teams would be participating in Wichita. This year, only Wichita will be in the Wichita regional while the KU and K-State teams will be in the new Kansas City region. Seven teams in total will be in the Wichita Region at Charles Koch Arena.
The Wichita State Alumni team, known as the Aftershocks, got the No. 2 seed in the Wichita Region, acting as one of three teams comprised mostly of one school’s alumni, along with “Forever Coogs” (Univ. of Houston) and “Austin’s Own” (Univ. of Texas). The Aftershocks will play the No. 7 seed “No Excuses” on July 18 at 8 p.m.
KU & K-State’s teams earned the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds respectively in the Kansas City Region, where they will play at Municipal Arena. If the teams win their first round matchup, they’ll play each other in the second round.
KU’s team, known as JHX Hoops, is the No. 2 seed and will play No. 7 “OffDaHook” July 19 at 3:00 p.m. K-State’s team, called Purple Reign, is the No. 3 seed and will play No. 6 “The Shine” July 19 at 1:00 p.m.
The Basketball Tournament (TBT) is an open-invitation, single-elimination tournament that has a cash prize of $1 million for the tournament winners. Many teams are comprised of alumni from NCAA DI schools or have comprised of international basketball players or former NBA players.
The TBT tournament uses modified NCAA men’s basketball rules, which most famously includes an Elam Ending. Every game has nine-minute quarters until the fourth quarter where the game will go into a timeout within the last four minutes. Then a target score is made, which normally is eight points more than the leading team’s score or the tied score. The ending ends the possibility of overtime and allows more time for come-from-behind efforts.
The tournament runs from July 18 through August 3.
