The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says the recent round of “swatting” incidents has foreign roots. Five such incidents, where fake calls are made claiming a threat with the hope of prompting intensive law enforcement action, were reported last week in southeast Kansas.
Attorney General Kris Kobach, who oversees the KBI, told Ad Astra News Friday while in McPherson for All Schools Day they are very confident of this theory. “It’s a single source doing of all of the swatting calls, or all of these fake bombing calls we’re talking about now,” Kobach explained, adding the KBI has technology that can pinpoint who is making these calls, or at least where they are coming from.
The fact these calls are coming from outside the United States is problematic. “If the individual is outside the United States, it makes it a little more difficult to make the arrest, but rest assured they will try to do that,” Kobach said, adding they will work with international partners on this.
Kobach added this is not unique to Kansas, as these incidents are being reported in a number of states.
