1937-2026
Gary Ray Kerwood, 88, passed away September 20, 2026, at William Newton Memorial Hospital in Winfield, KS. He was born November 9, 1937, in Hutchinson, KS, to Lloyd Archie Ray and Mildred Maxine (Coon) Kerwood.
In 1955, Gary graduated from Hutchinson High School. Shortly thereafter, he proudly joined the United States Army, where he honorably served for four years. Following his military service, Gary worked as an electrician for several companies throughout Hutchinson. He was a proud member of IBEW Local 661 for 65 years, a commitment that reflected his dedication to his profession and the union.
Outside of work, Gary found joy in the simple things that made life meaningful to him. He loved spending time outdoors fishing, trying his luck at the slot machines, and gathering with friends at the Moose Lodge for a friendly game of poker. A loyal sports fan, Gary enjoyed cheering on the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas City Chiefs. Earlier in life, he also enjoyed coaching Little League baseball, where he had the opportunity to share his love of the game and make a lasting impact on the young players he coached.
On December 18, 1959, he married Patricia Ann Gould at the Hadley United Methodist Church in Hutchinson. They shared over 66 years of marriage.
Gary is survived by: his wife, Patricia Kerwood of Attica, KS; sons, Scott (Alyssa) Kerwood of Hutto, TX, and Daniel (Amy Harwood) Kerwood of The Villages, FL; grandchildren, Ahren (Vanessa) Kerwood, Jessica (Justin) Rice, Katelynd (Justin) William, and Abigail (Aritt) Mullins; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Mildred Kerwood and two brothers, Larry and Ronnie Kerwood.
A graveside service will be Friday, October 2, 2026 at 10 a.m., at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson, with Reverend Mike Rose officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Friends may sign his memorial book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The family will be present to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Elliott Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Hutchinson Electrical Training Academy (HETA) to benefit the Gary Kerwood Scholarship for electrical apprentices, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N.
