The public is invited to learn about monarch butterflies and ways to support their annual migration during Monarchs, Milkweed, and More, a family-friendly educational program hosted by the Southwind Extension District on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Southwind Extension District office, 1006 N. State St., Iola.
The program will provide participants with information about monarch butterflies, their dependence on milkweed, and the native plants that provide important nectar sources throughout their migration. Attendees will also learn about the Monarch Waystation Program and observe a live monarch tagging demonstration.
Activities begin at 9:30 a.m. with an opportunity to explore the Southwind Extension District Demonstration Pollinator Garden. At 9:45 a.m., participants will learn about milkweed and other plants that monarch butterflies depend on for survival.
At 10:15 a.m., local gardener Greg Hunn will present “DIY Pollinator Gardens – Simple Ways to Support Monarchs and Pollinators,” sharing practical ideas for creating pollinator-friendly landscapes at home.
The program concludes with a presentation on Monarch Waystations and a tagging demonstration at 10:45 a.m., providing participants a closer look at monarch conservation efforts and migration research.
Children are welcome to attend and participate in ongoing monarch-themed activities from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m., including crafts, cookie decorating, and other fun educational experiences.
The event is designed for gardeners, nature enthusiasts, families, and anyone interested in supporting monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
