arian Christine Horton, 85 passed away at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
Marian was welcomed into this world on November 24, 1940 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Delbert and Etta (Evans) Patterson. Through the years, Marian lived in Detroit, Michigan, Columbia Missouri, Wichita, Kansas and in 1973 purchased a farm in Chanute, Kansas. Hard work was something Marian was never afraid of, she worked at the Ammunition Plant in Detroit, worked at a bakery, ran a daycare, and worked as a machinist at Harlow Tools in Wichita. While in Chanute, Marian worked at NuWa Campers, and HK Porter.
She had a deep love for her family and friends. Everyone knew when they come to visit Marian she would have a pot of coffee always on with some warm treats in the oven. Most of all, she loved her family as she was known as “Grandma Squaw”. Marian loved to tend to her garden, go fishing, and take road trips. Marian loved to jump off the main roads and take the path less traveled to take in all the beautiful scenery.
She is preceded in death by her son, Gary Duane Smith, daughters, Wanda Gail Greer, and Tonya Marie Horton, and grandson, Jeremy Smith.
Marian’s memory will carry on with her son Wendell Dean Smith, siblings, Glenn Patterson, and Carmen Carpenter, 5 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Countryside Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 15th with the family greeting friends from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, September 16th at 10:00am at Countryside Funeral Home with burial following at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
