The Hutchinson Monarchs snapped a two-game skid on Sunday, routing the Derby Twins 12-1 at Hobart-Detter Field.
The game ended after the top of the seventh inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. All five of the Monarchs’ wins this season have been by mercy rule.
The Monarchs had a great start from pitcher Brayden Henry, who threw three hitless innings and struck out seven in earning the win.
The Monarchs broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning, as Michael Barham belted a two-run double.
The Monarchs put the game away with a nine-run sixth inning. Incredibly, the Monarchs mustered just one hit in the inning, a James Dagenhart single on the second batter of the inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Caylin Grimes was hit by a pitch. Carter Hepner then walked, and Nash Wray’s RBI fielder’s choice brought in another run for a 6-0 lead.
Then, after the Monarchs loaded the bases again, consecutive walks were issued to Brice Wallar, Barnham, Brady Taylor and Dagenhart. With two outs and the bases loaded, Grimes and Hepner walked.
The Monarchs outhit Derby 8-3. Wray and Dagenhart had two hits apiece.
The Monarchs improved to 5-2 and will travel Tuesday to Derby.
