1942-2026
John Gary Epting, 83, of Burlington, Kansas, passed away peacefully on May 2, 2026, with family by his side. Born on August 10, 1942, in Burlington Kansas, he was the second of two children of Lindsay Ray and Opal Maye (Horr) Epting.
Gary’s life was shaped early by loss, as he was preceded in death by his parents at a very young age and, later, by his beloved wife, Polly Ann Epting, in 2021 after 55 years of marriage. From those hardships grew a man defined by resilience, humor, and a deep love for family and community.
He met Polly (Ruhter) in high school—despite her being warned about “that Epting boy” who might be a bit of a troublemaker. Fortunately, she took the risk. The two were married on June 11, 1966, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with laughter, devotion, and just enough mischief to keep things interesting.
Gary graduated from Burlington High School in 1960 and attended Pittsburg State University before answering the call to serve his country. He joined the United States Army in 1966 and served honorably until 1972, including overseas service in Vietnam. For his dedication and bravery, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal. His service was a source of quiet pride—something he carried with humility throughout his life.
After returning home, Gary and Polly made Burlington their permanent home. In 1973, they purchased Reisbig Marine, launching Gary’s Marine and turning his passion for engines into a livelihood. Whether it was a boat, a car, or anything with a motor, Gary had a knack for fixing it—and likely a joke to go with it. His work eventually led him to the Wolf Creek Nuclear Generating Station, where he began maintaining their boats and vehicles during its early construction. In 1982, he joined Wolf Creek full-time, dedicating 25 years before retiring in March 2007. If asked what he did all those years, Gary would likely shrug and say, “as little as possible”—though anyone who knew him understood just how far that was from the truth.
Gary was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington, where he served in nearly every role imaginable: elder, usher, cook, maintenance man, and dependable helper wherever needed. About the only things he didn’t do were play the organ or deliver a sermon—though some might argue he came close.
He found joy in working on cars, improving homes, and traveling, often with Polly by his side. He wasn’t afraid of a bold, flowery shirt or a colorful tie—dressing just flashy enough to keep up with Polly’s impeccable style. Around town, he was known for carrying $2 bills to leave as tips and for his humor, often slipping in a witty remark when you least expected it.
To his family, Gary was unforgettable for simpler things too—like coloring the children’s church bulletins during sermons (with a wink and perhaps an apology to the pastor) and his familiar farewell: “I’ll see you on the beach.”
He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Parker of Kansas City, and his son, Brandon Epting of Roselle, Illinois; four grandchildren, Coltyn Parker, and Karly, Kyra, and Grayson Epting; his sister, Linda Sedler of Las Vegas; and his niece, Tawnia (Olson) Dickson, and nephew, Tait Olson.
The family will greet friends from 6:00p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12th at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 13th 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Burlington, Kansas.
Gary will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud veteran, skilled mechanic, faithful servant, and a man whose humor and heart left a lasting mark on everyone he met. His life was one well-lived—and though he may be gone from our sight, we can almost hear him saying one last time:
“I’ll see you on the beach.”
