Phyllis Hughes, 94, passed away April 24, 2026, at Hospital District #1 of Rice County, Lyons. She was born January 27, 1932, in Lyons, the daughter of Elmer Enders and Jessie (Young) Enders. Phyllis was a lifelong resident of Rice County. She grew up on a farm with her brothers, Robert and Paul and attended Union 2 school until it burned down. She graduated with the Lyons High School class of 1950 and always enjoyed every reunion with her friends. She attended Emporia State University for one year and then came home and worked in the County Treasurer’s Office, the Extension Office and Chandler Bank. During her time at Chandler Bank she met Charles Hughes. They were married on January 26, 1957. Soon their daughters Teresa and Jill were born. Phyllis was a stay at home mom, but managed to work several bookkeeping jobs and loved to sew clothes for her daughters, quilt, paint, cook, and do crafts of all kinds. She was also known for her famous Belgium waffles that the grandkids loved. In later years she and Charlie would own and operate Hughes Retail Liquor and Hughes Realty. In her retirement years, she would take many trips with friends and volunteer for the Blood Bank and the polling office for elections. She was a member of the United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed doing puzzles and eating out with her special friend, Lee Ann Sidebottom. Survivors include: daughters, Teresa (LeRoy) Hicks, Lansing and Jill (Kyle) Berg, Hutchinson; brother, Paul (Arlene) Enders, Duluth, Georgia; grandchildren, Melissa (James) Tesson, Enid, OK, Laura (Matt) Johnson, Springhill, Andy (Kayla) Berg, Wichita, Whitney (Garrett) Aves, Hutchinson; great grandchildren, Kiernan Riffel, Springhill and Sutton and Graham Aves, Hutchinson. She is also survived by two nieces and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Jessie Enders; her husband, Charlie Hughes; and her brother, Robert Enders. Services will be Thursday, April 30th at 11:00 at the First United Methodist Church, Lyons, Ks. Visitation will be at 10:00 at the church with the family present. Memorials may be made to the Lyons Bell and Star Fund, Friends of Animals of Rice County or the United Methodist Church in care of Birzer Funeral Home, 214 West Ave. South, Lyons, KS 67554.
