Dick grew up in Las Animas and attended Bent County High School until 1965 when he joined the US Navy. He did basic training in San Diego, CA. He was flight engineer and flew on a P3 Orion during the Vietnam War stationed at Sangley Point in the Philippine Islands. Dick served until January 1969 and moved to Goodland, Kansas where he went to Colby Community College for a short time.
He married Kathlene Rice in August 1969. Dick played bass guitar in a country western band with Rex Rayner and Joann. In July of 1972 Dick and Kathlene welcomed a baby boy, Travis Ray. Dick changed careers to a truck driver, which he did for 7 years. He moved back to Colorado after he and Kathlene divorced in 1974.
Dick started working for Tree Top Ranch in Las Animas, CO, in 1977, where he met Nita Pointon. They married on May 26, 1979. In 1982 Dick started his career in the power plant industry. This lead him and Nita to California where Dick had risen to Operations Manager for Colmac Energy. In 1992 their son Christopher Wayne was born. Dick and his family stayed in California until 2010 when he retired and moved back to Las Animas, CO. to be closer to his wife’s family. In 2021, his wife Nita retired and they decided to move to Ellinwood, KS, to be closer to their youngest granddaughter.
Dick is survived by his wife, Nita; sons, Travis (Jennifer) of Beaver, UT, and Christopher (Stephanie) of Ellinwood, KS; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 18, 2026, at Fort Lyon National Cemetery, Las Animas, CO. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been designated to the Richard “Dick” Hunt Memorial Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home, 1425 Patton Rd., Great Bend, KS 67530.
