WICHITA, Kan. – The Hesston boys basketball team officially opened defense of their 2025 3A State title on Tuesday night at Friends University. The Swathers opened on a 13-2 run and went on to a 35-point win in the quarterfinal round of the the 3A State Tournament over Scott City.
Hesston 60, Scott City 25 – Hesston took a 13-2 lead early and extended it to 17-3 after one quarter. Ty Unruh got off to a hot scoring start for the Swathers, scoring 11 of their 17 points in the first frame. It was Jerick Humphreys that got things rolling in the second. Making back to back three-pointers to extend the lead to 20, the Swathers got another bucket to finish a 12-0 run and lead 25-3. Hesston held a 35-8 lead by halftime. Scott City did get their offense going in the third quarter as Hesston outscored them 11-10, but the Swathers used a 14-7 fourth quarter to win by 35 in the end.
Drew Bartell led Hesston with 18 points, scoring seven in the third quarter. Unruh finished with 13 after the 11-point opening quarter and Humphreys rounded out double figure scorers for the Swathers with 11. Hesston moved to 25-2 with the win and advanced to the 3A semifinals where they will face Burlington. The Wildcats won 59-44 over Heritage Christian in the quarterfinals in Emporia. The Swathers and Wildcats will play at 8:00 at the Hutchinson Sports Arena on Thursday night.
Scott City finished their season at 14-10 with the loss. Scoring was hard to come by for the Beavers as they were led by Cooper Irvin and Junior Meza with five points each.
