CANEY, Kan. – After making a three-hour trip to southeast Kansas to face Caney Valley, the Smoky Valley girls got off to a good start in their Sub-State quarterfinal game on Friday night. The Bullpups responded, though, as the Vikings season came to a close in a 21-point loss.
Caney Valley 61, Smoky Valley 40 – The Vikings took a 4-0 lead from the tipoff and held a 10-6 lead in the first quarter. Caney Valley adjusted and got things rolling from that point. Scoring the final nine points of the first quarter, they added a free throw early in the second to finish off a 10-0 run and lead 16-10. The Bullpups never looked back, going on a 16-1 run that stretched into the third quarter. They led 52-30 by the end of the third quarter and stretched their advantage to as big as 28 in the fourth, finishing with the 21-point victory in the end.
Elyn Washburn, the Bullpups’ leading scorer coming into the game, finished with a game-high 22 points, scoring 20 through the first three quarters. Ameris King-Dunn added 12 points off the bench as Caney Valley improved to 16-8 and will move on to face Southeast of Saline in the Sub-State semis. For Smoky Valley, freshman Natalee Brown scored a career high 14 points and Kenzley Haxton finished with 12, scoring eight in the third quarter. The Vikings finished their season at 6-15.
