Sterling Women start strong but comes up short

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sterling College fell to Avila University, 80-71, despite leading by as much as seven points in the first quarter. The Eagles outscored Sterling 27-14 in the final quarter to secure the victory.

Sterling began the first quarter with efficient scoring, quickly establishing a presence in the paint. McKenna Vogl and Kali Briar were pivotal, contributing early baskets that set the tone. Sterling’s defense was active, with Bailey Young recording a block that kept the Eagles off balance.

As the quarter progressed, Sterling maintained momentum with a series of well-executed plays. Karlee Jacobs and Nevaeh Johnson added to the scoring, helping Sterling build a lead. Despite a brief lead change, Sterling responded with a series of baskets, including a key 3-pointer from Briar, to extend the lead.

The quarter concluded with Sterling ahead 21–14, having capitalized on fast breaks and strong defensive rebounds to maintain control.

In the second quarter, Sterling maintained its advantage with contributions from Briar, who added points from the free-throw line and a three-pointer. Despite Sterling’s efforts, the Eagles responded with a series of successful shots, including a three-pointer by Ava Baker, allowing them to take the lead briefly. Sterling regained momentum with a layup by Vogl and a jumper by Briar, closing the quarter with a narrow 34-33 advantage for the Eagles.

In the third quarter, Sterling regained momentum with a determined effort, taking the lead with a key layup by Young at 7:30. This marked the beginning of a strong stretch where Sterling capitalized on its opportunities in the paint, scoring 18 points and maintaining pressure on the Eagles. Vogl’s jumper at 8:09 and Gracie Oard‘s points extended Sterling’s control, reaching a four-point lead at 2:57.

The Lady Warriors balanced its offensive drive with a steadfast defense, allowing only nine field goals by the home team. Despite a brief lead from the Eagles early in the quarter, Sterling’s consistent scoring, including a crucial layup by Young with 40 seconds remaining, ensured it closed the quarter ahead. The quarter concluded with Sterling leading the Eagles 57-53.

Sterling began the fourth quarter with momentum but quickly faced a challenge as the Eagles capitalized on turnovers to take the lead. Sterling managed to tie the score early, only for the Eagles to respond with a 9-point lead by the 6:11 mark. Despite efforts from Sterling’s Rori Miles and Young, who combined for crucial points and rebounds, the Eagles maintained control.

The Lady Warriors fought back with key plays from Jacobs and Erika Felker, closing the gap to one point with two minutes remaining. However, Avila’s consistent free-throw shooting extended its lead, ultimately securing an 80-71 victory. Sterling ended the quarter trailing, despite a strong offensive push in the final minutes.

Kali Briar scored 18 points and added five assists while securing six rebounds. Young recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, along with two blocks. Jacobs finished with 11 points and three rebounds, contributing a block and a steal. Vogl posted 10 points and collected six rebounds, adding a block to her performance.

The Lady Warriors (16-12, 10-8) look to bounce back in McPherson, Kan. as they take on McPherson College (7-18, 3-16) on Wednesday, Feb. 18 with tip off to take place at 6 p.m.
