OSAGE CITY, Kan. — On February 18th, 2026, the Frontier Extension District and Osage Garden and Produce will host a meeting to discuss how to start seeds indoors for your garden. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. at Osage Garden and Produce, located at 1048 Laing St., Osage City, KS.
Where to Start When Starting Seeds is a meeting that will focus on helping gardeners learn how to maximize their success when starting seeds indoors.
Lauren Gammill, Horticulture and Natural Resources Agent for Frontier District, will discuss why different mixes are used when starting seeds indoors. She will talk about what these mixes contain, how they help the seedling, and then allow participants to make their own soilless seed starting mix to bring home and use this spring. Osage Garden and Produce owner, Becky Siljenberg, will talk about all the materials you need when starting seeds, how to create a good environment for the seedlings in your home, how to choose varieties and time out your plantings, and ways to tackle the issues that arise when starting seeds indoors.
If you have started seeds inside before but haven’t had the best success, or maybe every spring your house fills with gnats and the soil is covered in molds and mushrooms, then you can still come to this program and learn about ways to maximize success and combat the issues that arise when we bring our gardens inside. You will have a chance to win seed packets and get your hands dirty with friends and neighbors while making your own seed mix.
When you start seeds indoors, you are getting a jump start on the gardening season. You will be able to harvest vegetables and see flowers bloom in your garden weeks earlier than if you threw seeds out in your garden later in the year. Not only will you be happy to have an earlier harvest, but you may also be helping the bees and butterflies by providing pollen a little bit earlier. Besides the jumpstart in your garden, it’s a good way to get excited for the growing season. “During the cold, dreary winter, it’s good to have something to look forward to and remind us that the spring and summer aren’t as far away as we think,” says Lauren Gammill.
If you are interested in attending this event, we ask that you register so we know how many materials to bring. You can do this by contacting the extension office or registering on the Osage Garden and Produce Facebook page. If you cannot attend the event, join us live on Facebook or check out the Frontier Extension webpage after the recording.
