
HAYSVILLE, Kan. – The McPherson High School Boys and Girls Basketball teams began their 2025-26 seasons at Haysville-Campus High School on Thursday, Dec. 4. The girls won thanks to a stifling second-half defense, 50-32, and then the boys won a nail-biter, 66-64.
Freshman Eli Reasoner had a strong debut for the Boys team. The 6’4″ forward delivered with 13 points, including making the game-winning layup with four seconds remaining. Senior guard Jett Pyle finished with a team-high and career-high 29 points, but made the game-winning assist to Reasoner on the alley-oop.

The Bullpups, who led by as many as six points, trailed entering the fourth quarter. McPherson led with 30 seconds remaining, but a game-tying and-one layup by Jagger Starbird tied the game at 64 before Reasoner’s game-winner. Ashton Malm also added 15 points.

The girls struggled in the early going against a scrappy Haysville-Campus bunch, however used a strong second-half defense to defeat Campus 50-32. Rylie Whitfield led all scorers with 12 points. Sophomore Amarie Lowery had nine second-half points to finish with a career-high 10 points.
The Bullpups only led by one point to end the first quarter, and only led by seven at halftime. However, they outscored the Lady Colts 26-15 in the second half. Their full-court defense forced multiple turnovers, while the offense drove to the basket to draw multiple fouls and send McPherson to the free-throw line 35 times.

Both McPherson teams are 1-0 to start the season. They continue the early-season round-robin at Salina South High School on Friday, Dec. 5. They will face the Salina-South Cougars, as the girls will tip off at 6:00 p.m. and the boys at approximately 7:30 p.m.
