PRATT, DODGE CITY & HUTCHINSON, Kan. (November 2025) — As the year comes to a close, Beyond Barriers is inviting community members to make a year-end contribution to help individuals with disabilities and aging Kansans achieve greater independence across the 60 counties it serves.
In 2025 alone, Beyond Barriers empowered 770 consumers—45 more than in 2024—to overcome obstacles and live fuller, more self-sufficient lives. Thanks to donor support, clients were able to achieve greater independence. Here are a few examples (names of clients are changed to protect their privacy):
- Steve, who is visually impaired, was able to get internet access for his rural home and now uses an OrCam device, a voice-activated technology that helps him identify objects and navigate his surroundings.
- Trisha is learning to schedule and attend her medical appointments, manage her budget, and prepare her own meals—steps that make a world of difference in her daily life.
Anna, another Beyond Barriers consumer, calls the organization her “second family.”
“There’s no judgment,” Anna said. “I was struggling to apply for Social Security and got rejected. I wanted to give up. They were patient, held my hand, and helped me appeal it. I would recommend them to anyone.”
Beyond Barriers provides free services to people with all types of disabilities regardless of diagnosis or status. Serving 15 Kansas counties, with offices in Pratt, Dodge City, and Hutchinson, the organization offers support in employment, independent living, blind/low vision services, and ADA compliance and community education.
“State funding covers only part of our costs,” said Erica Rivera, Executive Director. “Community gifts ensure that anyone who needs our help can receive it, free of charge. Every dollar truly makes a difference.”
According to consumer surveys:
- Nearly 100% rate their experience with Beyond Barriers positively.
- Over 80% say their lives have improved because of its services.
- Nearly 100% would recommend Beyond Barriers to others.
Donations directly support efforts to:
- Facilitate safe, accessible housing.
