Kaid McElgunn caught two long touchdown passes from Drew Dechant, and McElgunn also had an interception return for a touchdown Friday, as Trinity Catholic won its sixth straight game by beating Medicine Lodge 27-0.
The shutout was Trinity’s second in a row, and the Celtics held Medicine Lodge to 94 yards of offense. The Indians came into the game having not been shut out and scoring at least 21 points in five of their previous games.
Trinity got on the board with 2 minutes, 15 seconds left in the first quarter when McElgunn intercepted a pass and trotted 11 yards to the end zone.
The Celtics seemed destined to take a 7-0 lead at halftime, as the teams were locked in a defensive battle. But a late second-quarter 89-yard drive ended with a picture-perfect 28-yard touchdown pass from Drew Dechant to McElgunn in the back right corner of the end zone with 14.8 seconds left, giving Trinity a 13-0 lead at halftime.
The Celtics pulled away in the fourth quarter. With 9:06 left, Dechant scored from 10 yards out. Then, Lucas Griffith smashed the ensuing kickoff off one of Medicine Lodge’s up men, and Trinity recovered. Three plays later, Dechant fired a bomb down the right sideline to McElgunn for a 48-yard touchdown.
Dechant finished completing 11 of 17 passes for 143 yards, while also rushing for 69 yards.
Trinity improves to 6-1 and 4-0 in Class 1A District 7, and the Celtics will travel to undefeated Sterling next week with a district championship on the line.
