Angel Sainz of the 9th ranked Barton Community College men’s soccer team has been named the week five KJCCC Division I Offensive Player of the Week.
Sainz etched his name into program history last Thursday, scoring all four goals in the Cougars’ 4–0 road victory at Lamar Community College.
The freshman became just the sixth Cougar in now the 25th year of the program to score four goals in a match, finishing one shy of Harry Newman’s single-game record of five set in 2009. The performance also placed him among the top four in program history for most points in a single contest.
Sainz struck twice in each half, opening the scoring in the 27th minute off week three player of the week Masaki Tsuji‘s team-leading third assist before adding an unassisted tally seven minutes before halftime. He picked up where he left off in the second half, converting at the 71st minute from a feed by Kotaro Kimura, then completing the haul two minutes later on Higor Prestes‘ first collegiate assist.
Most recently, Sainz and the Cougars dropped a 2-1 decision Sunday at now 12th ranked Dodge City Community College, snapping Barton’s four-game winning streak.
Now 2-1-0 in conference play and 5-2-1 overall, the tough stretch continues today in traveling to No. 4 Cowley College for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff in Arkansas City.
