GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce welcomed elected officials and declared candidates to its inaugural Run Ready: Barton County Civic Leadership Lab on Monday, September 15. The half-day session, held at the Chamber Board Room, was designed to equip civic leaders with the tools, mindset, and inspiration to lead with integrity, resilience, and vision.

Run Ready is part of the Chamber’s Elevate GBK advocacy initiative and directly supports its strategic goal to partner with organizations like the Kansas Leadership Center, Kansas Chamber, Kansas Farm Bureau, and League of Women Voters to cultivate business leaders willing to run for office.

“This event was about more than preparing for a campaign—it was about preparing to lead,” said Megan Barfield, Chamber President. “We know that even the most experienced leaders need space to reflect, reconnect with their purpose, and build the emotional intelligence required to serve well.”

The morning began with a leadership coaching session facilitated by Kimberly Becker of Move Your Mountain Coaching & Consulting. Participants explored their personal “why,” practiced self-management in conflict, and learned how to stay present and ask powerful questions during tough conversations.

From 10:00 a.m. to noon, attendees heard from three distinguished civic leaders:

  • Joe Andrasek, former Mayor of Great Bend, shared his journey from blue-collar worker to city leader, emphasizing humility and community trust.
  • Senator Tory Marie Blew, Kansas State Senate, reflected on breaking barriers as a young candidate and the perseverance required to rise in public service.
  • William Nusser, Mayor of Larned, offered insights on navigating conflict and making courageous decisions in local government.

“Run Ready aligns perfectly with our mission to engage and empower Kansans to lead in their communities,” said Brenden Wirth, Engaged Kansas Coalition. “This kind of programming is essential to building a pipeline of leaders who are prepared not just to run but to serve.”

Attendees left with practical tools and renewed clarity about their leadership journey highlighting the value of reflection, connection, and courage in civic service.

The Chamber plans to expand the Run Ready program in 2026 to include sessions for those curious about future service, continuing its commitment to business advocacy and civic engagement across Barton County.
