GARNETT, Kan. — A report on Garnett’s wastewater improvements had some good news. Bob Coltrain from Midwest provided the information on a system evaluation and a recommendation on how to proceed with replacing clay service lines and brick manholes.
That evaluation identified 31,000 feet of clay pipe and 82 manholes that would be about a $9 million project. This would be the first phase of the project covering about half of the system, with the second phase to be done as funds permit.
An update was provided at a recent meeting with KDHE on the water plant, where turbidity data was reviewed that indicated the only issues with that show up in the startup of the plant, which is an expected occurrence. A request for proposals is also being issued to have a structural analysis of the Water Plant building, to see what kind of life the building has remaining.
The Commission approved an ordinance relating to parking of recreational vehicles in the city. The ordinance allows the parking of no more than two recreational vehicles on one single family lot, if it’s parked in a garage or a rear or side yard, at least seven feet from the property line.
Front yard parking will be allowed in the driveway in cases where it’s not practical or possible to park in a garage or where the rear or side yard doesn’t have reasonable access. They can only be occupied on-site no more than 14 days in a year and can’t block sidewalks or streets right of way. If it’s being used during renovation of the owner’s home that use could be allowed.
An update on the Swimming Pool filter project was given and City Manager Travis Wilson answered a question a lot of people have. While the filter is now in, the wrong flange bolts were sent and they are waiting on the correct ones to arrive, at which point they are going to run the water still in the pool through the system to make sure everything is working right. At that point the pool will finally be drained.
The Commission approved special event requests for the Cornstock Music Festival later this month along with the Lake Garnett Grand Prix Revival and the Anderson County Flywheelers event. It approved a temporary cereal malt beverage license for Cornstock, and a resolution and special event request for this month’s Concerts in the Park, which slipped through multiple cracks both with the organizers and at City Hall.
