GREAT BEND, Kan. — A step towards the first of three grant funded projects at Great Bend Municipal Airport were approved by the Great Bend Council Monday. Last August the Council approved a master agreement and work order with Garver, the city’s consultant on this project.
Airport Manager Martin Miller said the amendment will allow for work to proceed for submission of the final paperwork to the FAA for a just over $469,000 grant for most of a project on the airport’s main runway. This will cover rehabilitation of existing asphalt, seal coating and reapplication of runway markings.
The FAA grant will cover most of the cost of the overall project, with funding for another part of the project coming from a Kansas Department of Transportation Grant. The local match on the project will come to just over $86,000. The amended work order will carry a cost of $65,000.
The Council received the city’s 2024 audit report. Sean Gordon from Gordon CPA told the Council they issued an unmodified or clean opinion under the regulatory basis of auditing used by virtually every local government in Kansas. An identical opinion was issued on a separate “single audit” required due to the city receiving more than $750,000 in federal funds last year.
It approved a $49,120 contract with Mayer Specialty Services of Goddard for rehabilitation of 14 manholes and boxes in the city’s sanitary storm sewer system. Public Works Director Jason Cauley said the city has a long standing relationship with Mayer, which is the only company in the region that performs this type of work, which is highly specialized.
The Council approved the Kansas Region E Hazard Mitigation Plan. This plan covers an eight-county area taking in the western part of south central Kansas from Barton and Pawnee Counties south to the Oklahoma border, which makes participating entities eligible to apply for potential mitigation grant funding.
