Shirley Marguerite Horn
1943-2024

Shirley Marguerite Horn, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend graduated to glory at the age of 81 on June 24th, 2024 at Morningstar Care Homes, with God at her side.

Shirley’s life began on February 25, 1943, in Neodesha, Kansas, born to Ralph Cook and Florence (Lowers) Carter. She was first married to Frank Cohee, then to Tony Rodriguez, before finding her forever love with Ronald Horn, resulting in marriage on May 27, 1977, in Chanute Kansas.

She dedicated her life to her family, and nothing brought her more joy than caring for them–whether that be with a hot plate of enchiladas, or a freshly laundered pillow to lay their head. She was a member of Reachout Christian Church. Shirley found solace in reading scripture and attending services. A firm believer that idle hands were the devil’s playground, Shirley always carried a broom, rag, or a spoon, and if you didn’t watch her closely, she would get to cleaning, no matter whose home she may be in. Shirley also loved to journal, filling pages with her thoughts, and always had a pad of paper and pen close in case inspiration struck.

She had a way with words that always brought a smile to those around her, and laughter was never in short supply when she was in the room. Nothing stood in the way once she set her mind to a goal, and her family will forever be proud of her immense achievements, including her work done in manufacturing and production, prior to becoming a self-employed housekeeper.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Ronald Horn; brothers, Linkie Cook and Lonnie Cook; sisters, Elsie (Cook) Mead and Collen (Cook) Raida; her son Charles Cohee; and a granddaughter Asya Frazier. She is survived by her children; Cindy (Cohee) Gard of Chanute, KS; Carla (Cohee) Lafon of Chanute, KS; Gina (Rodriguez) Richwine of Olathe, KS; Nick Horn of Flushing MI; Terri Jo (Hellman) Conger of O'Fallon MO; and Jerry Horn of Chanute, KS. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings: Martin Cook of Shawnee KS; Janie (Cook) Steele of Neodesha KS; Leisa (Cook) Callarman of Altoona KS; and Mike Cook of Neodesha KS. Shirley also leaves behind 18 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren with one great-great-grandchild on the way.

Visitation is planned for Monday, July 1, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Wickham Family Funeral Home, located at 500 North Forest Avenue, Chanute, Kansas. A Celebration of Life Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 10:00 am, at the funeral home, followed by a burial at Memorial Park Cemetery, in Chanute, Kansas. The family requests that anyone who chooses to make a memorial to do so through the Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association, which can be mailed or left with the Wickham Family Funeral Home.

Shirley’s strength, kindness, empathy, and compassion will be remembered by her family and anyone blessed enough to have known her. May she rest in peace knowing that she made a lasting impact that will be felt for generations to come.
