Sarah S. Smith, 59, of Hutchinson, died May 25, 2024, at her home. She was born on May 5, 1965, in Clinton, OK. At 3 years old, she was adopted by Ralph William and Rose Madelene (Bunch) Walters.

Sarah graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1983. She worked as a secretary for Wiley Elementary School USD 308 for over 20 years. Sarah previously worked at Apple Lane Animal Hospital, The Highlands Golf Course, and Hutchinson Family Dental under Dr. Stucky as a dental assistant. In her free time, she enjoyed many hobbies. Sarah loved dotting, a form of painting using dots, scrapbooking, thrifting and garage saling, cruising in her Slugbug, and playing bunco. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, doing chips and salsa dates, and tending her ladybug garden with her granddaughters. Sports played a meaningful role in her life. She watched her son and, more recently, her granddaughters play sports, always with a handful of dill pickle sunflower seeds.

She was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. Sarah grew up attending Eastwood Church of Christ; she also attended Crosspoint Church and Temple Baptist Church in Hutchinson.

She married Brian Halula for a short time and later divorced. On July 4, 1988, she married Dan Smith in Hutchinson. They had two children and shared 34 years of marriage before they divorced.

Sarah is survived by her: daughter, Ashley (Josh) Bengtson of Hutchinson; son, Brody (Claire) Smith of Inman; granddaughters, Gracie and Claire Bengtson of Hutchinson; brother, Ray G. (Sandy) Walters of Independence, MO; sisters, Ruby Ducate of Lawrence, KS, and Bernadean ‘Bunny’ (Eddy) Egbert of Reeds Spring, MO; biological brother, Donny (Alice) Alexander of Hinton, OK; biological half-sister, Jamie (Mark) Rowan of Binger, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lois F. Thayer, and nephew, Jeffery Slavenburg.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2024, at Elliott Mortuary. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Thursday, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2024.
