1936-2025
Richard Jay Carlisle, 89 years of age, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2025, at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.
Richard was born on May 13, 1936, in Madison, Kansas, to the late William Howard Carlisle and Helen (Bumgardner) Carlisle. He was the second of four children, with two brothers and one sister. He lived in various counties throughout Kansas before ultimately settling in Wichita.
On October 5, 1972, Richard married Maria Carlisle. He had three children: Steve, Stan, and William. Richard was a man of unwavering strength, humility, and dedication. He began working in the oil fields at a young age before transitioning to a career as a truck driver—a profession he not only excelled at but deeply enjoyed. He also proudly served in the U.S. Army, where he learned the values of hard work and discipline.
Richard’s greatest joy in life was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who cherished every moment with his loved ones—whether gathered around the dinner table or sharing stories over a cup of coffee. He had a warm, infectious laugh that could light up any room and a kind heart that welcomed everyone.
Outside of the family, Richard enjoyed spending time with friends, especially over an afternoon coffee. He had a particular fondness for Western movies and TV shows, which he could watch for hours.
Richard’s strong sense of humor and ability to find joy in life’s simple moments left a lasting impression on all who knew him, as well as his reminder to “stay out of the pool hall.” He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and integrity. He will be deeply missed by everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Victor and Cecil; sisters Sharon and Reba; and his son, Stan; in-laws Steve Lipp and Aaron, Arland and Karen, Pat and Gary.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Maria; his son William Carlisle and wife, Angie; grandsons Corey, Josh, and Wyatt (Cassie); and great-grandchildren Colt and Sawyer. He is also survived by his son Steve Carlisle; grandchildren Stefanie and Sabrina; great-grandchildren Raven, Crystal, Dakota, Austin, Max, and Madeline; and great-great-grandchildren Sean, Logan, Lily, Tatem, and Halsey. He is also survived by his sister, Rita (Don); in-laws Nevil (Vickie), Margarita, Wally (Jerrie), and Glenda (Gary), Tanya and family, Lisa (Rusty) and family; Larry, Wendee, Robyn, Bryan, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will all cherish his memory.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of life will be scheduled for a later date.
