1931-2024

Melvin Leroy Casey, a devoted husband, loving father, doting grandfather, cherished friend, and outdoor enthusiast, peacefully passed away on May 29, 2024, at the age of 92, surrounded by his family. Born on July 31, 1931, in Oilton, Creek County, Oklahoma, to John Melton and Allie Edna Casey, Melvin's life was characterized by his love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his passion for the outdoors. Proud of his Native American and Irish heritage, Melvin carried the traditions and values of his ancestors throughout his life. After attending Liberal High School, he enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving his country for four years of active duty followed by four years in the reserve. Following his military service, Melvin returned to his hometown of Liberal, Kansas, where he met the love of his life, Mary Vieanna Tuman, at a skating rink. Mary was captivated by Melvin's piercing blue eyes and his charming crooked grin, and their chance encounter sparked a romance that lasted over six decades. On May 10, 1956, Melvin and Mary Vieanna exchanged vows, beginning a loving partnership that was the foundation of their family. Together, they raised two daughters, Teresa and Rhonda, instilling in them the values of integrity, compassion, and resilience. He spent many years working at MAPCO in McPherson, Kansas, before retiring. His dedication to excellence and his strong work ethic made him a valued member of the MAPCO team. Outside of work and family, Melvin found solace and joy in the great outdoors. He and Mary Vieanna enjoyed many memorable fishing trips together, creating cherished memories that would last a lifetime. Melvin also had a passion for woodworking, crafting beautiful pieces with his hands and sharing his love for the craft with others. Melvin and Mary spent much of their time enjoying the outdoors, fishing at the various places they called home. Melvin was deeply committed to serving his community. He volunteered at the fire department in Fort Cobb, embodying the spirit of selflessness and bravery that defined his life. Additionally, he was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion, continuing to support his fellow servicemen and women. Melvin's gentle spirit, warm demeanor, and love for life endeared him to all who knew him. He had a deep appreciation for nature and found peace and contentment in its beauty.
