Mary Rempel, 98, of Hesston, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2025 at Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton. She was born on September 19, 1926 in Leroy, Saskatchewan, Canada to Abram and Maria (Wiebe) Pankratz.
Mary was united in marriage to Dietrich Rempel on August 29, 1953. He survives after almost 72 years of marriage.
Mary attended normal school, where she earned her teacher’s license. Later, she and Dietrich were the first married couple to graduate from Canadian Mennonite Bible College. Mary’s life was centered around children and she ran a childcare service from her home. She was an educator as well as an editor and translator for various Mennonite publications. She was a member of Shalom Mennonite Church in Newton.
Mary is survived by her husband, Dietrich Rempel of North Newton; daughters, Nadine (John) Voth of Hesston, and Nelda (Larry) Litwiller of Harrisonburg, VA; five grandchildren, Marie Voth, Aaron Voth, Dorothy (Jacob) Neff, Nicole (Luke) Litwiller, and Jordan Litwiller; and two sisters, Clara Friesen and Anne Klassen, both of British Columbia, Canada.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Harvey; stillborn daughter, Dorothy; and eight siblings.
Mary embraced all of God’s creation with wonder, appreciation, and love. She never saw a crossword puzzle she couldn’t master, and she and Dietrich continued the joy of biking together into their 90s.
A memorial service will be held at Kidron Bethel Chapel on July 18 at 2 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Playschool, Inc. (Newton) or Hesston Community Child Care Association in care of Miller-Ott Funeral Home, PO Box 32, Hesston, KS 67062.
