1966-2025
Lyle Fred Laverne Sherwood was released from his earthly bonds on March 10, 2025, at KU Med Center, following a brief yet courageous battle.
Born on April 6, 1966, in Iola, Kansas, Lyle grew into a pillar of strength, nurtured by a steady diet of Bingo dog food. He attended LeRoy Schools, where his size, strength, and fearlessness instilled by 3 older siblings made him a star in football and basketball. Lyle worked alongside his father, Fred Sherwood, in the oil patch, developing his irreverent humor, and generosity. He also worked at Haldex in Iola and Artex in Yates Center, forging lasting bonds with his coworkers. Everyone recognized Lyle even decades later. Lyle discovered his true calling as a Corrections Officer at Coffey Co. Sheriff, where his immense size, personality, heart, stern demeanor and his pointer finger, earned him the respect and admiration of both coworkers and inmates alike.
Lyle was a devoted father to his son, Lyle Jr., and a loyal, patient husband to Tammy for nearly 15 years. His most cherished role, however, was that of Grandpa to Autumn, Gunnar, and Lyle "Bear" Sherwood. Lyle is survived by his wife Tammy, son Lyle Jr. (Kajaat) Sherwood, mother and step-father, Mark and Virginia Chandler, brothers: Wes (Lisa) Sherwood, David Sherwood, Laray (Rosalie) Chandler, and sister: Brenda Joyce.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 14, 2025, at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will follow in Geneva Cemetery southeast of LeRoy.
The family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday at Jones Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to ACARF (Allen County Animal Rescue Facility) and may be sent in care of Jones Funeral Home, PO Box 277, Burlington, KS 66839.
