1937-2024
He graduated from El Dorado High School in the class of 1955 and then went on to El Dorado Junior College on a basketball scholarship. He graduated from Emporia State University in 1960 with a Bachelor’s of science of education and received his Master’s degree in 1965.
Carl married Joan Miller on November 25, 1959 in El Dorado, Kansas.
Carl was a beloved teacher and coach in the Hesston School District for 28 years. He coached boys and girls basketball, cross country, golf, and tennis. He established the Hesston Recreation and Community Education and served as director for 23 years. After his years of contributing to the community, he was honored to have the Hesston softball field named after him in 2019.
When he retired from the school district, he served as a custodian at Whitestone Mennonite Church where he was a member for many years. He served on the board for the Schowalter Villa for 13 years.
He was a devoted father and grandpa, always available for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He shared his interests in gardening, woodworking, and athletics with his family and many close friends.
Carl & Joan celebrated 62 years of marriage before Joan passed in 2021. Carl leaves behind his two daughters, Tracey Ripperger and Marcy Key, both of Wichita; four grandchildren, Lindsay (Jaimie) Hay, Emily (Justin) Syrios, Madie Boyer, and Cameron (Anna) Key; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Joan, and his sister, Kathryn (Boyer) Martin.
Visitation and viewing will be Sunday, September 15 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Whitestone Mennonite Church. Memorial service to be held on Monday, September 16 at 11 a.m. at Whitestone Mennonite Church.
