Betty Jean Schofield of Burlington, Kansas, passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.  She was 94 years old.

Jean was born May 29, 1931, at Alva, OK, the daughter of Ed and Hazel (Hunter) Maddy. She spent her childhood at Wakita, OK, and graduated from Wakita High School.

While working as a school secretary she became acquainted with Raymond Leroy Schofield. They were married on January 22, 1950, at Wakita. They became the parents of a son and a daughter.

The family lived in several locations following Raymond’s career in education. During this time Jean stayed home and cared for her family. In 1972 they moved to a home in the Big Creek Community in Coffey County, KS, and Raymond became Superintendent of the LeRoy, Kansas Schools. Jean went to work in the school cafeteria until she retired in 1986.

Her husband, Raymond, preceded her in death on February 16, 1995. Jean remained in their home until 2005 when she moved to Columbia, MO, to make her home with her daughter. Jean longed to return to Coffey County and in August of 2018 she and her daughter, Nita, moved to Burlington, KS.

While in Coffey County Jean was a member of the First Christian Church in LeRoy. After moving to Columbia, she was baptized in the Pentecostal Church. Jean had been a member of the Royal Neighbors and the Cola Hill Grange in Coffey County.

Jean loved to sew, cook, and do embroidery, and was an avid reader. She especially enjoyed time outdoors with her family, camping and fishing. She always kept a garden.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Juanita Tucker and her husband, Ben.

She leaves her children, Ed Schofield (Joyce), Erie, KS, and Nita Jean Schofield, Burlington; 3 grandchildren, Tiffany LaMew (Shawn), Greg Thomas, and Aimee Thomas (Lisa); 5 great-grandchildren, Tiffany’s children, Forrest Ambrose (Micki), Lake Ambrose (Amanda), and Paige LaMew. Also, LaQuiesha Johnson, and Aimee’s step-daughter, Briar Rose; 2 great-great- grandchildren, Lake’s children, River and Chloe, other relatives and friends.
