Alvin Lamonte “Monte” Turpen

Alvin Lamonte “Monte” Turpen, 91, of Lyons, Kansas, passed away June 29, 2024, at his home. He was born April 14, 1933, in Hutchinson, Kansas, the son of Caroline Stewart. Monte was a near lifelong Lyons resident. He graduated from Hutchinson High School with the class of 1951 and attended Hutchinson Community College. Monte served in the United States Army. He was owner and operator of Lyons Bowl, owner and operator of Turpen Painting both in Lyons; and also worked at Alco in Lyons, in the shipping and receiving department. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Lyons, member of the BPAA (The Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America), member of the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), and was a member of Friends of Animals Rice County. Monte enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, playing the coronet, watching movies, especially westerns, and telling jokes and stories. He was a good artist, liked collecting comics, coins, and movies, and enjoyed his dogs. Monte was married to Ruth Crabbs in 1988 for twelve years. They later divorced. He was married to Darlene Turpen in December of 1971 for fifteen years. They later divorced. Monte is survived by his three daughters, Wendi Lea and husband Robbie of Sterling, KS, Ashley Staples of Lyons, KS, and Cindy Dobbins of Lyons, KS; ten grandchildren, Chiton Brinson and wife Sidney, Keaton Brinson and husband Will, Captain Morgan Brinson and wife Casey, Taylor Lea and fiancé D.J., Cory Lea and fiancé Lilly, Payten Staples, Anden Staples, Graysen Staples, Raelen Staples, and Erik Dobbins and wife Lanna; six great-grandchildren, Skylar Brinson, Blake Brinson, Remi Brinson, Xander Brinson, Isiah Lea, Amira Cole, and one on the way; two cousins, Debbie Metzger, and Herb Unruh and wife Patty; several nieces; and one nephew. Monte is preceded in death by his mother; brother, Thomas Turpen; and grandson, Jaelen Staples. Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at the First Baptist Church, Lyons, with Pastor Joel Grizzle and Wendi Lea officiating. Military honors by the Ft. Riley Honor Guard. Memorials may be given to Friends of Animals Rice County in care of Birzer Funeral Home, Lyons.
